Update: Deputies arrest driver after he flees crash near Alexandria; names now released
Initial investigation indicates that a passenger car was traveling eastbound on County Road 82 when it crossed the center line, striking a pickup truck.
A driver who was involved in a two-vehicle crash near Alexandria Tuesday night, Dec. 14 fled the scene, triggering a search by foot, by dog and by drone.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a report of the crash shorty after 8 p.m. It happened on County Road 82 near the intersection of County Road 9, about three miles east of Alexandria.
Names of the drivers have now been released. They are Nicolas Abel, 28, of St. Cloud and Joshua Zins, 18, of Nelson.
When deputies arrived on scene, a witness reported that a male, later identified as Abel, got out of the vehicle and took off on foot.
Initial investigation indicates that a passenger car, driven by Abel, was traveling eastbound on County Road 82 when it crossed the center line, striking a pickup truck, driven by Zins, that was traveling westbound on County Road 82, according to the sheriff's office.
Douglas County deployed a K-9 unit along with a drone in attempt to locate Abel.
A short time later, Abel was found and taken into custody after being treated by North Ambulance for minor injuries, according to the sheriff's office.
Zins was also treated by North Ambulance and released.
The incident is still under investigation.
The sheriff's office was assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol, North Ambulance Service and the Osakis Police Department.
