The Alexandria wrestling team has wrestled right with a lot of Central Lakes Conference programs this year, and it doesn’t get any closer than what happened on Friday night.
The Cardinals were in St. Cloud to face St. Cloud Tech and Sartell-St. Stephen. They tied both of those matches -- 30-30 against Tech and 34-34 against the Sabres. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they were on the wrong end of criterias in losing both.
The Sabres had one more six-point win than Alexandria to take that team victory after the tie. Nolan Fettig (106) and Mason McGrane (113) had forfeit wins for the Cardinals to start the match. Blaze Nelson (132, tech fall, 18-3), Kelly Johnson (145, tech fall, 18-3), Cody Vatnsdal (152, 12-6), Tate Runge (160, fall, 3:17), and Gavryn Fernholz (195, SV-1, 6-4) all had contested wins against the Sabres.
Tech won the final four matches, the final two by forfeit, to rally for a 30-30 tie and eventually the win due to having less forfeits in the match.
McGrane was quick to get a pin (0:55) for Alexandria at 106. Brenden Bryce added an 8-3 decision win at 120, while Nelson (132, fall, 4:48), Cole Vatnsdal (138, 7-0), Johnson (145, 9-3), Runge (152, 8-4) and JP Rodel (170, fall, 1:31) all added wins.
