Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale-Parkers Prairie senior heavyweight wrestler Craig Orlando is a two-time state champion and looking for more this year when the Raiders take the floor.

“He leads by example and lets his results do the talking,” BHVPP head coach Bill Wagner said. “His calm composure will help lead the team through an extremely tough schedule.”

Orlando is one of 18 returning letter-winners from the 2018-19 season. Wagner will not only turn to him but also Carter Rokes for leadership.

“He has a lot of wrestling experience under his belt. Not to mention some military training,” Wagner said. “This maturity will be needed as the team goes deep into the season. There are a host of juniors and sophomores on the BHVPP team with the potential to step into a leadership role.”

Wagner sees Otter Tail Central and West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville as top teams to beat in Section 6A, with New York Mills, Staples-Motley and Border West also fielding competitive programs.

The returning state champions could be a powerhouse in the Park Region Conference again. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle-Browerville will try to defend its title against OTC and WCA.

Wagner says the team goals are to finish near the top of the section and the conference.

“We need to be at the top of our game if we wish to get out of the section and make the state tournament,” he said. “OTC is the team to beat with a plethora of seniors on their squad, lots of experience coming back and more than a handful of guys that were in the state tournament last year.”
