Wrestling: Olson takes home top honors

The West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville wrestling team voted senior Wyatt Olson as the Most Valuable Player for the Knights.

Olson went to state in the 195 pound weight class. He took home third place to cap off an impressive season. Olson had 42 wins on the season with 33 pins. He earned his 50th and 75th career win in his all-conference calibur season. Olson also won the sportsmanship award. This was the third year that he lettered.

The Hardest Worker Award was given to sophomore Jordan Lohse. Lohse was the second of three state participants. He wrestled in the 138 pound weight class. His efforts earned him a second place conference tournament finish. Lohse earned his 100th career wins and led the team in takedowns with 55. Lohse was also named to the Park Region all-conference team.

Eighth Grader Anthony Sykora was the final state participant for the Knights. He had 25 pins throughout the season led the team with two tech falls in the 126 pound weight class. Sykora also led the Knights in nearfalls with 24. His strong season earned himself the Most Excited Wrestler award.

The Most Improved Award was given to sophomore Austin Mattson in the 285 pound weight class. The Rookie Wrestler of the Year award was awarded to Freshman Colton Lindquest in the 182 pound weight class. Rounding out the awards was Tammie Olson, who won Most Dedicated Fan.

WCAABE will bring a strong group of letter winners back from this season. The Knights are graduating six seniors. As a team, they were successful on and off the wrestling mat. They earned the Team Gold Award with a cumulative GPA of 3.54. The Knights had 28 wrestlers maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher in grades 7-12.
