The West Central Area girls' basketball team survived quite a scare in its opening game of the Section 6AA Tournament last Thursday night.
The Knights found themselves down by 15 at one point in the first half and eight at halftime. They survived a 5 of 7 shooting performance by Long Prairie-Grey Eagle from behind the three-point line in the first half to pick up a 73-60 win.
It was a huge second half by the Knights that led them to a victory. West Central Area outscored LPGE by 21 in the final 18 minutes to overcome the eight-point deficit at the break.
That deficit could have been worse, but the Knights went on a 7-0 run to end the half.
The second half was all West Central Area, thanks in large part to Liza Torgerson. Torgerson scored 24 of her game-high 35 points in the final 18 minutes. April Nelson was the only other player in double figures for WCA, but they got contributions from a number of players.
