West Central Area boys win Quad County Conference championship

Ashby's Celi Nelson ties for conference MVP honors, while Lexi Hunter represents West Central Area as an all-conference player on the girls' side.

The West Central Area boys golf team wrapped up a Quad County Conference title by winning the league’s championship tournament on Monday at Tipsinah Mounds.

The Knights shot a 334, beating Hillcrest Lutheran Academy (343) by nine shots. Border West was third with a 369. Joel Quam of Hillcrest was the tournament medalist with a 76, and Underwood’s Trevor Swonger was second individually with a 77.

Mitch Dewey led the Knights with a 79, good for third place overall. Grant Beuckens was fifth with an 83, while Peyton Hanson (85) and Marshall Dewey (87) finished the team scoring. Sam Hanson shot a 92 and Tate Christenson shot a 95 to finish WCA’s lineup.

Jacob Cook (90) and Ethan Johnsrud (99) were the two golfers for Ashby at the tournament.

West Central Area has been the team to beat in the Quad County Conference all season, and the Knights had six guys earn all-conference honors. The top 15 players by season scoring average earn that honor.

Beuckens finished third in those individual standings, while Mitch Dewey (4th), P. Hanson (5th), Marshall Dewey (10th), Christenson (12th) and S. Hanson (15th) were also all-conference. Quam was the conference MVP as the lowest scorer throughout the season.

Ashby’s Celi Nelson and Ady Tisdal of Ottertail Central tied for the girls’ MVP honor in the conference. The top-10 lowest season scorers earned all-conference honors on the girls’ side, with WCA’s Lexi Hunter finishing ninth in the league as the lone representative for the Knights.
