WCA wrestlers win two in triangular

The West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville wrestling team came away from the Ottertail Central Triangular with two wins against the OTC Bulldogs and Pelican Rapids on Tuesday night.

The West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville wrestling team came away from the Ottertail Central Triangular with two wins against the OTC Bulldogs and Pelican Rapids on Tuesday night.

The Knights beat OTC 39-31 before taking care of Pelican Rapids 51-18.
“Tonight didn’t go perfect, but I think it was a night of wrestling that our boys needed,” head coach Brandon Gruchow said. “They got a taste of what could happen if they don’t come out 100 percent ready and mentally prepared. The coaching staff will be drilling that into their heads from now until the end of the season, day in and day out. It was a great learning experience and that’s what pre-tournament time is all about.”
Hunter Mickelson earned his first varsity win against Pelican Rapids to get WCA going at 106 pounds with a pin in the second period. Drake Swanson added a fall in 1:49 (113 pounds), while Jake Nohre won 3-0 at 120 pounds.
The Knights lost the next four matches before Jake Larkin stopped the bleeding with a pin at 152 pounds. Kyle Mickelsen followed with a third-period pin at 160 pounds. Royal Crow won 3-0 at 170, Blake Amundson won 6-3 at 182 and Hunter Fick pinned his man at 195 before the Knights finished off the win with two forfeit wins in the final two weight classes.
Larkin also had a first-period pin against OTC in his first match.
“It just wasn’t enough to lift us up and keep us going strong,” Gruchow said. “It was a very tight dual through the whole entire match. Tyler Onstad racked up some points in the third period to pull ahead and get a good win. Things weren’t going in our favor until senior Royal Crow, who wrestled at the 170 pound weight class, earned a first period fall. This time the team responded and got fired up and we won the next three out of the four matches.”
Buzz Miller secured the dual for his team after a first-period pin at the heavyweight position. Other winners from WCA-B-E against OTC were Nohre, Amundson and Fick.
“It was nice to know that even though we may not have wrestled as well as we could have, we still found a way to win 39-31,” Gruchow said.
