The Minnewaska volleyball team had to go on the road for its Section 3AA Tournament opener on Thursday night, but the Lakers made it worth their while.

Minnewaska (14-10) is seeded sixth in the tournament, but upset third-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins by sweeping the Eagles (17-8). The Lakers won 25-19, 25-20 and 28-26 after also beating Eden Valley-Watkins in five sets during the regular season.

Ellie Danielson had another big game at the net. She finished with 27 kills and 11 digs. Emma Thorfinnson and Alexis Piekarski each added seven kills, and Sara Geiser finished with 42 assists.

The win for the Lakers means a match-up against second-seeded Redwood Valley on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in Redwood Falls. The Cardinals are 24-5 after sweeping Paynesville Area in their opening match of the tournament.
