Kristin Trosvig knocked in a goal at the 5:16 mark of overtime Thursday to give the Alexandria girls hockey team a 1-0 victory over St. Cloud.
Neither team could find the back of the net through the first 51 minutes of play, sending the game to an eight minute overtime. That is when Trosvig’s goal gave the Cardinals a 1-0 victory.
Head coach Blair Hovel said the Cardinals did not come out with the effort level that he expected for the Central Lakes Conference battle.
“We were a little slow, we were a little off key,” Hovel said. “That’s what we were talking about in the locker room, is coming together as a team and working hard for each other. If we do that, then we’re satisfied with however the scoreboard looks.”
St. Cloud came in to the game with only one win on the year. The Icebreakers tied for first place in the CLC last year but lost some of their offensive players from that team.
“Amy [Jost] got some good shots on net, but it was more our turnovers that were causing good opportunities,” Hovel said. “They’re down, but they work hard.”
Jost picked up the shutout victory after stopping all 27 of the Icebreakers’ shots on goal. St. Cloud goaltender Allie Rosenkrans made 18 saves on 19 shots.
The victory improved the Cardinals to a 6-4-1 record this season. Hovel said the year has been up-and-down so far. One of the main areas of focus for the Cardinals this season has been improving the scoring threat.
“It’s still been a struggle, it still has been,” Hovel said. “It will come. It’s just one of those things where you’ve got to know what to do when you don’t have the puck, and then eventually that puck just ends up on your stick with a wide open net.”
