The Minnewaska girls track and field program had one of its best seasons in team history last spring, and if given the chance, the Lakers looked poised for another big season.

Minnewaska has returning athletes on the roster, including Ellie Danielson, Kristen Glover, Emma Kovarik, Bailey Schoen, MaKena Thoen and Emily Kaiser. All of those girls were state-meet participants in 2019.

“We have good numbers, a lot of young kids, and many returning letter winners,” Minnewaska head coach Jennifer Johnsrud said of the stretch of this team. “We also have four seniors who will do a great job with leadership within our team; Ellie Danielson, Alexis Piekarski, Madison Kluver and Karra Hanson.”

Last year’s major accomplishments for this team is a long list. Perhaps most notable was a state true team championship at the Class A level.

“(We want to see) individual and team improvement, make a run for a West Central Conference title, subsection 6A title, along with a great showing at section true team and Section 6A,” Johnsrud said. “We advanced 12 boys and girls to the state meet last year, so that would also be another awesome achievement.”

Johnsrud said Stephanie Langman is the lone pole vaulter for Minnewaska, so the Lakers will try to find more kids to add some depth there in what is a tough event.

Sierra Lindemann was the lone Minnewaska letter winner lost from last year’s team, so the Lakers are excited about the prospects of the 2020 season if things do get going at some point this spring.

Johnsrud sees Morris and Melrose as other top teams in the West Central Conference, and Morris, Osakis, Perham and Pequot Lakes as the programs to contend with in the subsection and section meets.
