Track and field: Pahl takes second in discus to pace area Class A athletes on day one of state

The finals for the Class A state track and field meet are set, and area programs will be well represented.

Osakis senior Jacob Backes had a podium finish in a finals after taking seventh in the pole vault. He cleared 13-feet, 9-inches on Friday, while Jacob Munsch of Plainview-Elgin won the state championship by clearing 15 feet. Backes also ran in the 300-meter hurdles and took 11th in Friday’s prelims with a time of 41.83.

Fellow Osakis senior Elizabeth Pahl qualified for both the state shot put and discus, and is off to a great start after finishing second in the discus finals on Friday. She had a throw of 127-08, less than four feet behind state champion Desera Engholm of Pequot Lakes at 131-04.

The Minnewaska track and field teams also sent a dozen athletes to state between the boys and girls.

Sophomore Connor Johnsrud finished in sixth place in the triple jump finals with a mark of 42-10.75. Matthias Algarin of Pierz won that event with a leap of 45-03.75. Parkers Prairie junior Jayden Gylsen also competed in the triple jump and finished with a mark of 41-03.50, good for 11th.

The Minnewaska boys team also placed John Helander, Aiden Tank, Tyson Meyer and Jackson Meyer into the 4x100 relay at state, but a false start led to a disqualification in the prelims.

Ellie Danielson already has a podium finish for the Minnewaska girls. She finished sixth in the high jump finals by clearing 5-02. Madi Schirmer of Maple River won the state title after clearing 5-feet, 4-inches.

Emily Kaiser will also run in two state finals for the Minnewaska girls on Saturday. She was seventh in the 200-meter dash (26.50) and eighth in the 100-meter dash (12.72) during Friday’s prelims. The top nine athletes qualify for the finals out of the prelims.

The final day of the Class A state meet gets going at Hamline University in St. Paul on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with the 4x800 relay.

Minnewaska’s 4x800 relay team of Bailey Schoen, Makena Thoen, Kristen Glover and Danielson will take part in that race. Minnewaska’s Peyton Johnsrud will also compete in the high jump, and Pahl of Osakis will go for another podium finish in the shot put.
