There were limited state tournament spots up for grabs in the opening day of the Section 8AA track and field meet in Fergus Falls on Wednesday night.
The Alexandria boys grabbed one of those and also qualified nine athletes for Saturday’s section finals in Willmar.
Senior thrower Jaymeson Wolkow placed second in the shot put on Wednesday with a personal-best throw of 51-1.5 to secure his spot at state for the first time.
Nine others qualified for Saturday’s finals through Wednesday’s prelims. Daniel Jantzen and Joshua Kietzmann both advanced to the finals in the 110 hurdles. Drew Olson, Nolan Morical and Derrek Piepho did the same in the 100-meter dash. Ethan Schroeder qualified in the 400-meter dash. Kietzmann qualified in the 300 hurdles and Olson and Cody Branson qualified in the 200-meter dash.
The final spots at the state meet at Hamline University June 7-8 will be up for grabs in Willmar on Saturday when the 8AA finals get going at 9:30 a.m.
