Osakis girls tennis still has two players left standing in the Section 6A singles tournament after the first round of play on Oct. 13.
Mara VanNyhuis and Leah Maddock both made the semifinals that are set for Oct. 19 at 9 a.m. in Rogers. VanNyhuis won her first match 6-0, 6-0 and then 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals against Hailey Hokanson of Sauk Centre. VanNyhuis, the No. 1 seed in the bracket, will play Isla Dille, the fifth seed from Litchfield, in the semifinals.
Maddock, an 8th-grader in her first season on varsity, is the third seed in the bracket. She beat Addy Hoffman of Sauk Centre in a 6-0, 6-1 match in the opening round before taking a 6-0, 6-0 match against Leah Hagen of Minnewaska in the quarterfinals. Maddock will play second-seeded Ryanna Steinhaus of Litchfield on Wednesday.
Olivia Bleick also played in the singles tournament for Minnewaska and fell 6-0, 6-1 to Dille in her opening match.
Osakis had two teams get opening-round wins in the doubles tournament. Kennedy and Ellie George won 6-0, 6-0, but then fell 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.
Larissa Hoffarth and Lexi Spychalla won 6-3, 6-0 in their opening match, but they fell in the second round to a familiar duo in Minnewaska’s Alissa Thorfinnson and Maddie Thorfinnson. The Thorfinnsons won 6-0, 6-0 in their opener and then 6-1, 6-2 in the second round to advance to the semifinals on Oct. 19. They will play Izzy Schmiesing and Delaney Hanson of New London-Spicer with a trip to the finals on the line.
Minnewaska’s Addy Randt and Olivia Richards also got a first-round win (6-2, 6-3), but fell 7-6, 6-2 to Lauren Erickson and Karlee Prahl of Litchfield in the quarterfinals.
