Alexandria seniors Gannon Lueck and Jacob Partington have been a part of two of the best seasons in program history in 2019 and 2021, and they finished their careers by fighting to the last point in a three-setter at the state doubles tournament on June 10.
Lueck (23-6) and Partington (22-9) faced the Wayzata duo of Tanay Panguluri (22-8) and Jack Bomier (26-4) in the opening round of the AA tournament. The Cardinals got off to a fast start with a 6-3 win in the first set, but Panguluri and Bomier found ways to win the final sets by 7-5, 7-5 scores.
“Jacob and Gannon started well winning the first set but struggled in many aspects of their game in the next two sets,” Alexandria head coach Dave Ronning said. “Although it was very close the entire way, they just weren't able to overcome unforced errors and solid play from Wayzata.”
Lueck and Partington’s run to the state tournament after winning Section 8-2A was the first time a doubles team from Alexandria has made the state tournament since 2005. Partington played No. 1 singles for most of the team season as both guys helped Alexandria to a Central Lakes Conference championship this year and a run to the section title match against Bemidji.
“It was an incredible run for our doubles pair and they have nothing to hang their heads about,” Ronning said. “We are so proud of the efforts they gave and the impact they have had on our team, school, and community in their years in our program.”
