Tennis: Cardinals split with DL, Willmar
The Alexandria boys tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday as the Cardinals hosted a home triangular at AAHS with Detroit Lakes and Willmar.
Alexandria controlled its match with the Lakers, winning 7-0, but fellow Section 8AA and Central Lakes Conference rival Willmar got the best of Alexandria in a 6-1 final.
“Willmar is a very solid team from the top of their lineup to the bottom,” Alexandria head coach Dave Ronning said. “Their lineup consists of all seniors, and they appear to be the team to beat in the CLC and the section.”
Alexandria’s only win against Willmar came at third doubles from Chris Bienusa and Pieter Mulder. They won a tight three-setter that finished 7-6 (4), 2-6, 11-9.
Willmar won three of its four singles matches in straight sets. Alexandria sophomore Gannon Lueck was the only one to force a third, but Ryan Ackerman won that fourth singles match, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.
Things went much more in Alexandria’s favor against Detroit Lakes. The Cardinals got wins from JJ Foster, Eli Simonson, Alex Jost and Sam Maier in the singles lineup.
Lueck teamed up with Jacob Partington at first doubles to win 6-1, 6-1. Evan Lattimer and Zach Wosepka won by that same score at second doubles, and Mulder and Dylan Nelson won a 7-5, 6-4 match at the third doubles spot to complete the sweep.
