Alexandria wrestler Josh Betterman was named the Central Lakes Conference performer of the week in his sport after the Cardinal 171-pounder won the title at that weight class during the Section 8AAA tournament.


Betterman had to defeat a wrestler he had lost to the previous week to earn the title.

Carls starts

for U of M

Heidi Carls of Villard, a redshirt junior at the University of Minnesota, is the starting outfielder for the Golden Gopher softball team.

Carls, a graduate of Minnewaska Area High School, has an .889 fielding percentage with six putouts and two assists so far this season.

She is batting .232 with 13 hits and eight runs batted in.

Indoor 3-D

archery shoot


The Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department and Stutsman County Wildlife Federation announce that they will be holding the 14th annual 3-D archery shoot March 6, 7, 8 at the Jamestown Civic Center, 212 3rd Street NE, in Jamestown, North Dakota.

The events will include 25 target 3-D round, 300 round, team (NDBA rules) shoot, challenge round and cub course targets.

Registration times are Friday, March 6, 5-8 p.m., Saturday, March 7, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, March 8, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Hanstad 19th for Rams

Alexandria's Bryce Hanstad finished 19th for the Colorado State University men's golf team as the Rams finished sixth in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate meet in Hawaii.

Hanstad carded rounds of 69-69-74 for a total 212.

Softball practice


A reminder to all softball players in grades 10-12 that practice will start on Monday, March 9, at 3:15 p.m. in the wrestling room at Jefferson High School.

All players need to have their registration forms completed prior to participating.

Following practice there will be a parent meeting at 5 p.m. in the Jefferson High School choir room.

Golden Gloves

Golden Gloves boxing will be held at the Wadena Armory Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Boxers from Brainerd, Fergus Falls, Duluth, Detroit Lakes, Crossroads and Leech Lake will compete.

Indoor tot soccer

Lakes Area Recreation is offering a new tot soccer program designed for 3 year olds.

One parent/guardian will join their child in the 30-minute activity, which begins Wednesday, March 25.

Class will consist of age appropriate games and activities that will introduce soccer skills.

The program is limited to 20 participants on a first-come, first-served basis and will be coached by Alexandria girls' soccer head coach Tom Roos.

Indoor arena soccer

Lakes Area Recreation is offering 6-on-6 indoor soccer.

The program will be held at the Runestone Community Center beginning March 23.

The kindergarten through 2nd grade program will be held on Saturdays, with the 3rd through 6th grade program being held twice a week.

The program will be coached by Alexandria girls' soccer coach Tom Roos.

Runestone Spiel set for March 6-8

The Vikingland Curling Club's third annual Runestone Spiel is set for Friday-Sunday, March 6-8 at the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria.

This is a 16-team open bonspiel on arena ice.

Cost is $180 per team with each team guaranteed three games.

Entry fee also includes Saturday and Sunday morning coffee and rolls, Saturday lunch and banquet, along with snacks and a T-shirt.

Movie premier at the Barn

On Saturday, March 14, the Nations Foundation will show the premier of its new snowboard movie "One Year" at 7 p.m. at the Barn next to the Holiday Inn.

The film portrays the positive side of snowboarding with life changing stories.

Some of the pro snowboarders in the film include Simon Chamberlain, Andy Finch, Tommy Czeschin, Kelly Clark and Dave Downing.

The preview is an all ages event and is free to the public.

There will also be door prizes.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Little Beetles baseball tryouts

The Alexandria Little Beetles 13-year-old traveling baseball team will hold tryouts Sunday, March 22 at Lakes Area Recreation from 3:30-5 p.m.

Players who turn 14 before May 1, 2009 are ineligible.

There is no charge for the tryout.

Muskies Inc. awards banquet date change

The Vikingland Chapter of Muskies Inc. has changed the date of its annual fundraiser and awards banquet from March 14 to March 21 at 6 p.m. at Herby's in Carlos.

Money from the fundraiser is used to support the Minnesota DNR, the Let's Go Fishing program that takes seniors on boat rides and/or fishing, Fishing Fun Day that pairs members of the public with a Vikingland member to educate them on muskie fishing, the Lake Oscar Kids Fishing Derby, as well as helping to provide bathroom facilities at the Lobster Lake access and other boat launches without those facilities.

Perham Spring Fling boys' basketball tournament

The 14th annual Perham "Spring Fling" boys' basketball tournament is set for Friday and Saturday, April 4-5.

There will be divisions for grades 3-9.

Cost is $100 per team, and the deadline for registraton is March 30.

FCA 5K April 25

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will hold its annual FCA 5K on Saturday, April 25.

The event starts at 8:30 a.m. and will be held at Lake Geneva Bible Camp.

Wrestling Booster meeting

The Alexandria Cardinal Wrestling Booster Club will hold monthly meetings on the first Monday of each month.

Meetings are held in the Jefferson High School faculty lounge.

Anyone interested in helping provide a quality wrestling program for K-12 District 206 students is encouraged to attend.

Meetings start at 6 p.m. with an emphasis on the elementary programs.

At 7 p.m., the meeting will switch to an emphasis on 7-12 wrestling and regular business for the booster club.
