The West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville wrestling team hosted its own tournament over the weekend and took third, while Alexandria came away with a second-place finish. Dawson-Boyd-LQPV United won the tournament behind seven top three individual finishes.
Alexandria had five top-three finishes. Blake Olhausen got a win at the 145 pound weight class as he won a tight 2-0 match in the championship. Dustin Neu also won the 160-pound weight class as he took care of business in a 9-3 championship match win over Royal Crow of WCA-A-B-E.
Runner-up finishes for Alexandria came from Ben Johnson at 106 pounds and Adam Johnson at 113. Adam Johnson lost a 5-0 decision in the championship match against WCA-A-B-E's Jake Nohre. The Knights came into the day hoping to defend their home mats with a team win, but had to settle for third.
"Things started off great; I felt like our guys were wrestling fairly well," head coach Brandon Gruchow said. "As the day progressed, it seemed as though we got less aggressive offensively. We weren’t attacking and pushing the pace in our matches. It cost us a few important and key matches throughout the day. It was our first tournament of the year and it is a lot different than a dual or triangular. There is a grind that goes along with a tournament and today many of our wrestlers didn’t embrace the grind."
The Knights had a couple more second-place finishes outside of Crow's at 160 pounds. Hunter Fick took second at 195 pounds. He got a pin in 3:27 in his semifinals match but was pinned himself in 3:34 against New York Mills' Sam Erckenbrack. Buzz Miller also took second at 220 pounds. He got pins in less than two minutes in each of his first two matches but lost an 8-1 decision in the championship.
Alexandria's other top-three finish came from Gage Zieske at 126 pounds. Zieske won by major decision, 9-1, in the third-place match.
