The Brandon-Evansville softball team got its season going at the Minnewaska Invite on Saturday, and things could not have gone much better for the Chargers.
Brandon-Evansville went 3-0 at the event, beating Ottertail Central 8-1, Breckenridge-Wahpeton 5-3 and Minnewaska 12-1.
“We came into today with a lot of excitement, anticipation and unknowns about how things would go,” B-E head coach Kasi Sieling said. “It took a little bit to get settled in and work the nerves out, but this group did a great job of being patient in the box to find their pitch and move girls around.”
Mikenna Pattrin threw all five innings in the season-opening win against OTC. The senior allowed just two hits and one unearned run, while walking two and striking out five. Bailey Schaefer led the offense with two hits and three RBIs, and Kylee Dingwall and Kaytlyn Pattrin each had two runs scored and combined for three RBIs.
Mikenna Pattrin got her second win of the day against Minnewaska as she allowed just three hits and gave up the one run. Schaefer and Kiley Lund both had three hits in that game.
Schaefer got her first varsity pitching start against Breckenridge-Wahpeton and earned a win in the closest game of the day. Schaefer scattered four hits and two walks, while striking out four and allowing just two earned runs.
“She did an outstanding job in her debut in the circle,” Sieling said. “Defensively, newcomers Kendra Klimek and Kylee Dingwall made some key plays, which is always exciting to see early in the season. Offensively, we put the ball in play consistently and were aggressive on the bases to get runs in. This was a really fun game to see the girls come together and do some of the little things on the bases we have been working on.”
In the three games, the Chargers totaled 25 hits and allowed just nine.
“This was an exciting start to the season after everything these girls have gone through to get to
this point,” Sieling said. “I am extremely proud of how every single one of our players really stepped up and did everything they could today to help the team be successful. We still have some things to improve on, but it’s always nice to open the season with a day like today.”
