Softball: Osakis drops two of three in busy start to the week

The Osakis softball team played three games between Monday and Tuesday.

The Silverstreaks fell in the first game to Holdingford on Monday afternoon, 15-5. Junior Maddie Johnson went 2-for-2. Sophomore Grace Oeltjen went 1-for-3 with two RBIs

“We did not play well in this game,” Osakis head coach John Stigman said. “Offensively, we did not make good contact. In the circle, we gave up way too many free passes. We continued to fight, despite what was happening on the field, but the ball was just not giving us any bounces.”

The Silverstreaks’s bats slowed again in their second game on Monday night as Albany beat Osakis 11-2.

Senior Morgan Herzog went 2-for-3 and sophomore Laynee Hartshorn had an RBI double.

“We had moments when we played really good softball, followed by moments in which we didn’t,” Stigman said. “At some point, things will start to click with our team. Take nothing away from Albany, they played well. We just have to continue to get better at the little things, especially in situations that can lead to big things.”

Osakis was able to bounce back from the two losses on Monday with an 8-6 win over Swanville on Tuesday afternoon.

A five-run second inning was enough run support for freshman starting pitcher Hayleigh Niehoff. She pitched five innings, gave up five hits, and two earned runs. Johnson went 2-for-2 at the plate. Sophomore Tia Dykema went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

“We played a better game today than we had in the previous two. We played more as a team,” Stigman said. “Hayleigh had a nice start for us. She did not hurt herself and stayed around the strike zone. It was a nice start for her, earning her first career win.”

Osakis will head to Royalton on Thursday to try and improve on its 3-3 record.
