The Alexandria boys soccer team got a win that head coach Brandon Johnson was especially proud of on Monday night after the Cardinals beat Section 8A rival St. Cloud Cathedral in a 2-1 game.
“It has been five years since the Cardinals have walked away from the pitch with a win against the Cathedral Crusaders,” Johnson said. “Last year, the Crusaders thwarted the Cardinals’ hope of advancing in the section playoffs. Needless to say, this was a huge win for the team's confidence.”
It took a late-game comeback. Cathedral (2-4) led 1-0 after a goal in the 26th minute. It took until the 68th minute for the Cardinals to answer after they got a direct free kick outside the Crusaders’ penalty area. Joshua Kietzmann capitalized on the shot as his kick found the back of the net for a 1-1 tie.
It was part of a big couple minutes for Kietzmann. Senior Floris Van Halewijn set him up with an assist a minute after that tying goal as Kietzmann’s second score of the night proved to be the game-winner. Alexandria held possession of the ball in the closing minutes to fend off Cathedral.
The Cardinals maintained possession during 54.5% of the game. They took just seven shots on goal, but that was enough with the defense limiting St. Cloud to just six shots. Ryan Meuwissen got the win in net for Alexandria as the Cardinals improved to 5-3-1 ahead of a home contest with Moorhead at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
