The Alexandria girls soccer team fell in its season opener at East Grand Forks on Thursday as the Green Wave won a 3-0 contest.

East Grand Forks’ Kadyn Melquist got the shutout in net as she stopped six Alexandria shots. The Cardinals’ Sophia Vinje was kept busy having to make 18 stops.

The Green Wave got on the board in the 25th minute when Chloe Torgerson found the net off an assist from Ellie McDonald. Fourteen minutes later, McDonald scored one herself to make it 2-0 at the half. Torgerson then put the finishing touches on the win with a goal in the 68th minute.

The Cardinals (0-1) will try to bounce back in their home opener on Saturday when they welcome in Detroit Lakes for a 3 p.m. game.
