Senior spotlight: Lakers’ miss chance to defend true team title

The Minnewaska girls track and field team was loaded and ready to build on a big season from 2019.

The Lakers were a deep and talented roster last spring on their way to winning the Class A true team state meet. A big part of that group was this year’s four seniors in Ellie Danielson, Alexis Piekarski, Karra Hanson and Madison Kluver.

The Echo Press reached out to all of the Lakers’ seniors after the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For those who responded, this story centers around four questions: Why do they compete in track and field? What do they miss most about it this spring? What is a favorite memory from competing? What are their future plans after high school, and do they plan on competing again?

Why she competes: I compete in track and field because it is an opportunity to stay in shape and make new connections. I have met so many people through track, and I consider them my close friends. It is also an opportunity to connect better with your teammates!

What she misses most: I miss being with my friends and teammates. I miss meet days and competing with my fellow seniors, but I think most of all I miss the family feeling! We are all there supporting each other and pushing each other to get our (personal record), or cut a second off our run.

Favorite memory: My favorite memory of track and field had to be winning true team state last year! We were hoping to defend our title this year, and that really hit hard when we couldn’t. I’m thankful that I got to be a part of that experience for the first time in school history.

Future plans: My future plans include attending Southeast Technical College in Sioux Falls, S.D. for medical sonography, known as ultrasound technician. I do not plan to compete in track and field after I graduate high school.

Why she competes: I compete in track and field because I like to stay in shape, hang out with my friends, and make new friends.

What she misses most: What I miss the most about track and field are the memories I could have made my last year in track and striving to run my best times since I didn’t get to compete much last year due to having back surgery.

Favorite memory: My favorite memory I have from track is the bus rides with my teammates and being able to get to know some of them better.

Future plans: My future plans are to attend North Dakota State University in the fall to major in radiology.
