The West Central Area track and field teams each took third place in the opening meet of the regular season last Thursday.

Senior Kyle Schill won the 800 (2:12) and 1,600-meter (4:55) races to lead all boys athletes. Alex Salwasser took second behind Schill in the mile-long run with a time of 5:12. Tyler Stone carried the load in the boys throwing events with a second-place discus throw (116-03) and a fourth-place shot put (33-03).

The girls were led by senior Brynn Fernholz, who won the triple jump at 31 feet 10 inches. She also tied for first in the high jump at 4 feet 8 inches. Lexi Bright had an impressive day in taking first in the long jump (15-02) and the 800-meter run (2:37). She also finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.01.

“Overall, we are very pleased with development in this young season,” WCA head coach Austin Hanson said. “Over half of our team had never been to a track meet before, so most of this is a brand new experience. We can’t wait to see what this season has in store for them.”
