Roundup: Swerman’s home run not enough for Alexandria in Willmar, while Minnewaska wins behind one-hitter for Alexander

The Alexandria baseball team ran into one of the best Class 3A teams in the state on Tuesday night as Willmar improved to 14-2 with a 4-1 win on its home field.

Willmar’s only two losses this season came in 5-4 and 6-0 games against Sartell-St. Stephen (13-2) on May 17. Ian Koosman threw a complete game for Willmar against Alexandria. He struck out 11 and allowed one run on five hits and a walk. Alexandria’s lone run came on a Devan Swerman solo home run in the fourth inning.

Shay Endres gave Alexandria a chance on the mound. He scattered three hits and three walks in four innings. The Cardinals committed four errors that led to a couple of unearned runs.

Alexander tosses one-hitter for Lakers

Minnewaska senior Darion Alexander tossed a one-hitter in a 3-1 win over Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta (9-8) on May 18.

The Lakers improved to 9-7 after Alexander struck out eight and limited the Tigers to just one run in the first inning. Aaron Ver Steeg had an RBI, and Mitchell Gruber put the pressure on the Morris defense by laying down sacrifice bunts in his first two at-bats that led to errors and runs scored for Minnewaska.
