The Osakis girls basketball team lost a couple of close games early this season, but the Silverstreaks found a way to win one in overtime against Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta on Friday.

Osakis (8-6) has now won four straight games after a 48-46 win over the Tigers (4-12). The Silverstreaks led much of the night but never by more than six.

“Morris was aggressive on the defensive end and made our girls find ways to get open looks,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “We played a good game defensively. We just have to rebound better, especially late in games. We were able to get a defensive stop at the end of regulation to get the game to overtime.”

Osakis scored the first five points of the extra session on a Grace Oeltjen three and a Hayleigh Niehoff two-point bucket.

“Morris had the ball with four seconds left in OT and had to go the length of the court,” Kalpin said. “We forced them into a half-court shot miss to win the game. It was a fun game for our team being it was senior and parents’ night.”

The Silverstreaks held the Tigers to 27.8% shooting. Alexis Johanson had a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds, and Tessa Stanek added nine points and four assists.

“Alexis had a solid night for us, leading us in scoring and rebounding. Tessa Stanek came off the bench and gave the team productive minutes and made a late free throw to put us up two in OT,” Kalpin said. “Different girls stepped up and made plays to help get the win."

Chargers get back on track

Brandon-Evansville (6-8) and Ashby (3-11) were both in need of a win on Saturday afternoon, and it was the Chargers who got it in a 51-25 final.

“We got off to a very slow, methodical start with just some really unnecessary turnovers and poor decision making,” B-E head coach Zach Traphagen said. “Finally turned the corner with about five minutes to play in the first half and finished the game playing much better on both ends of the floor.”

Mikenna Pattrin had 15 points and five rebounds. Olivia Otto finished with 14 points, and Bailey Schaefer had 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists to help the Chargers break out of a stretch where they had won just one of the last seven games.

“It's always nice to get back into the win column after a couple of tough losses earlier this week, but we need to play with more focus for 36 minutes rather than just 18 minutes,” Traphagen said. “Olivia Otto really stood out today as a bright spot for us offensively. Mikenna and Bailey did some good things for us in the second half as well.”

Minnewaska boys drop fifth straight

The Minnewaska boys basketball team (6-9) lost a third straight close contest and fifth straight game overall after falling in a 51-50 game against Litchfield (11-4) on Saturday.

The Dragons got a game-high 24 points from Avery Liestman, while Sam Hested led the Lakers with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.
