The playoffs are a time for seniors to step up, and Osakis’ Grace Oeltjen certainly did that in the Section 6-2A tournament opener on Tuesday.
Oeltjen fell just a double shy of the cycle as she led the sixth-seeded Silverstreaks to a 10-6 win over 11th-seeded Melrose. She singled in the first and sixth innings, tripled in the second and homered in the fifth to finish with three RBIs and three runs scored.
“Grace had a big day at the plate,” Osakis head coach John Stigman said. “She continues to play this game at a high level and full speed. Hayleigh (Niehoff) threw well and was able to work through a few jams throughout the game.”
Niehoff went all seven innings and allowed just one earned run. She scattered four hits and three walks, while striking out 10.
Five defensive errors ultimately did not end up costing Osakis the win after the Silverstreaks pounded out 11 hits. Freshman Maggie Dirkes doubled as part of a two-hit day, and senior Tia Dykema also doubled and drove in three runs. Junior Shelbe Schmidt added two RBIs.
