Richards reaches 1,000-point mark in 96-51 win over Frazee

Sam Richards passed the 1,000-point mark in his career with a 22-point night in the West Central Area boys' basketball win over Frazee on Monday night.

Sam Richards passed the 1,000-point mark in his career with a 22-point night in the West Central Area boys' basketball win over Frazee on Monday night.

Richards came into the game with 983 points and was a part of a great shooting night for the Knights. WCA shot 56 percent (33-of-59). That helped them take a 51-27 lead into the break.

The Knights never looked back from there. They rolled to 45 points in the second half and earned their 10th win of the season in the process.

Richards led five players in double figures for WCA. Bryce Olson had 17, while Jake Boeddeker, Colton Blascyk and Christian Hammer had 13, 11 and 10, respectively.

West Central Area overcame an early 19-10 deficit to pick up a 70-68 win over Lake Park-Audubon last Friday night.

Beau Kashmark highlighted the win by posting the second triple-double in West Central Area history. He finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

Sam Richards also had a big night with 20 of his 23 points in the second half as the Knights held on for the narrow victory. The Raiders jumped out early but fell behind by two at the break.

The two teams were tied at 50 apiece before the Knights started to extend their lead. WCA built its lead to six points before the Raiders made another run.

Free throws proved to be the difference down the stretch. The Knights did not shoot a high percentage but they went to the line 43 times, hitting 25 to secure the win. They also held a 38-29 edge in rebounds in the game.

"Our determination in controlling the glass was big for us tonight," head coach Kraig Hunter said.
