Wrestling roundup: Alexandria, Osakis, B-H-V-PP shine in weekend action

The Alexandria wrestling team earned third out of eight teams at the Park City duals in Cottage Grove, while Osakis went 4-1 in its duals over the weekend. Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale-Parkers Prairie had a strong weekend as well at the Sertoma Tournament in Grand Forks.

The Alexandria wrestling program took part in the Park Wolfpack duals on Saturday, Dec. 10 and took third place after winning four duals.

The Cardinals outlasted River Falls (WI) in the third place match 39-38 after they built a 30-0 lead five matches in.

Drayson Elfering (113), Mason McGrane (126), Jacob Loween (132) and Blaze Nelson (152) earned pins in the third place dual, while Gavin Engelbrecht (160) earned a 9-4 decision. Alexandria won two matches in the dual via forfeit.

Alexandria also defeated Spectrum (71-9) and St. Thomas Academy (47-36). Alexandria’s lone loss of the day came to Cambridge-Isanti (47-26).

Nolan Fettig (106), Zachary Richards (120), Brenden Bryce (138), Nelson, Landon Raths (170), Landon Seward (182), Pablo Garcia (195) and Dylan Gray (220) all earned pins against Spectrum, while Loween won his match via technical fall, 20-4 and Alexandria won three weights via forfeit.

Against St. Thomas Academy, the score was 41-35 Alexandria with two matches to go and Alexandria could seal the dual with a win by Jackson Saffert at 220 pounds. Saffert delivered a pin 49 seconds into his match and helped the Cardinals wins. Fettig, Lowell, Cole Vatsnadl (152), and Raths also had pins for the Cardinals, while Nelson won via technical fall 18-2 and Alexandria won two weights via forfeit.

Crosby-Ironton defeated Alexandria by winning the last five out of six matches. Fettig, McGrane, Nelson and Seward earned pins in that dual, while Vatsnald won his match at 152 by an 8-5 decision.

Alexandria, along with Pine River/Pequot Lakes, is on the road with a dual against Perham on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

BHVPP’s Ervasti wins title at Sertoma tournament

The Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale-Parkers Prairie wrestling team competed in the 48th Sertoma Tournament in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on Dec. 9-10, and in the girls tournament, junior Abby Ervasti took home the title at 155 pounds.

Ervasti won all four of her matches with pins, including two pins in under 45 seconds in her first two matches. Ervasti outscored her opponents 15-1 and ended the tournament with a pin in the finals over Central Cass’ Jordan Flynn (1:14). Ervasti is ranked No. 2 at 145 in Minnesota by The Guillotine behind Apple Valley’s Grace Alagbo. Last season, Ervasti made the state finals at 145 and finished runner up behind Alagbo.

The Raiders placed ninth in the team dual tournament with a 1-3 record. The Raiders opened the tournament with a 51-24 win over Fargo Davies. Bennett Arceneau (132), Holden Traux (160), Justin Koehn (182), Braden Shamp (220) and Preston Captain (126) picked up pins in the dual, while Hudson Traux (106) won via 19-3 technical fall and Justin Olson (120) won by 12-1 major decision.

BHVPP lost 46-25 to Bismarck Century in the quarterfinals. David Revering (152) and Shamp picked up pins, while Hudson Traux won by an 11-3 major decision, Arceneau picked a 8-4 decision and BHVPP won via forfeit at 113.

Perham topped BHVPP in the next dual, 54-24. Cayden Kimber (170), Hudson Traux, Revering and Orran Hart (113) all earned pins in the dual.

Valley City picked up the 36-35 win over BHVPP in the seventh place dual by winning the last match 4-3. BHVPP won two matches via open weight, two by a pin (Hudson Traux and Captain), two by major decision (Arceneau and Revering) and one by 3-0 decision (Blake Sumstad at 160).

BHVPP wrestles next at a Pequot Lakes tournament at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16.

Osakis goes 4-1 in weekend duals

The Osakis wrestling team had a strong weekend on the mat, as it was 4-1 combined in duals at Ortonville and Barnesville. The Silverstreaks went 1-1 at a triangular in Ortonville on Friday and 3-0 in duals at Barnesville on Saturday.

Jacob Taplin (132) and Brennen Gustafson (170) picked up two pins in the Silverstreaks' 72-12 win over Ortonville. The Silverstreaks won 10 matches via forfeit.

Osakis’ lone loss of the weekend came against Atwater-Cosmos-Groves City on Friday, 39-38.

ACGC won the last four out of five matches in the dual, all with pins

Ashton Pastian (106), Reggie George (113), Christian Nathe (132), Kale Drevlow (145) and Conner Koep (195) all earned pins for Osakis, while Simon Jacobson (120) and Gaven Cimbura (160) won via major decision.

In Barnesville, Osakis defeated Fertile Beltrami (58-24), Barnesville (52-27), and Fargo North (46-33).

Against Fertile-Beltrami, Osakis won eight straight weights (132 to 195). George, Nathe, Drevlow and Cimbura picked up pins in the dual, while Blake Fischer (106) won via major decision. Osakis won five matches via forfeit.

Fischer, Nathe, Drevlow, and Cimbura all had pins in the Barnesville dual, while Fischer picked up another win via major decision and Gustafson earned a win via injury time. Osakis picked up three wins via forfeit.

The Silverstreaks got off to a strong start against Fargo North as they led 46-6 through nine matches.

Fischer, Nathe, Drevlow and Cimbura won via pin, while Taplin won via major decision.

Osakis hosts a triangular against New York Mills and United North Central at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
