Wrestling: Minnewaska advances in Section 5A Team Playoffs

The Minnewaska Area Lakers advance to the Section 5A semifinals with a win over Canby.

With a 38-27 win over Canby Thursday, the Minnewaska wrestling team advanced to the MSHSL Team Section 5A semifinals.

The Lakers, who are ranked No. 12 in Class A by the Guillotine, earned the win by winning the final four out of five matches of the dual.

Senior Dalton Friedrichs (170) pinned Alan Malanado (1:28), while junior Xander Johnson (182) earned the quickest pin of the night by pinning Eyan Olson in nine seconds.

Junior Chase Boelke and senior Nathan Rankin sealed the dual for the Lakers. Boelke pinned Wesley Verhelst in 27 seconds, while Rankin earned a win in sudden victory one over Parker Verhelst, 8-6.

Minnewaska started off the dual strong with victories in three of the first four bouts.

Freshman Chase Smith (ranked No. 9 at 113 in Class A by the Guillotine) earned a 4-3 win over Issac Guzman, while junior Nick Ankeny (120) shut out Clayton Drietz 6-0 and sophomore Jayce Kovarik (126) earned a 15-8 victory over Blake Giese, 15-8.

Sophomore Mason Schiffler (138) picked up a 7-4 decision over Sam Drietz, while senior Jacob Blair (ranked No. 10 at 152 in Class A) earned a 19-3 technical fall victory over Sawyer Verhelst.

Minnewaska is set to face fifth-ranked Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in the Section 5A semifinals at Benson High School on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

If Minnewaska were to advance to the finals, it would face the winner of the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Minneota dual. The Section 5A finals dual is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
