GLENWOOD — The Minnewaska volleyball team has a roster that has played together for a couple of seasons now, and the Lakers will lean on a group of seven returning juniors to help set the tone this fall.
“We are a young team without seniors,” head coach Michele Johnson said. “Most of the team played together on varsity for two or more years, so we will rely on our past experience and leadership.”
Avery Fier, Haley Shea and Dreya Barsness are the three junior captains for the Lakers. Barsness has tallied 161 kills and 178 digs over the past couple seasons. Fier has 472 digs and 161 kills since 2020, and Shea has 670 assists and 241 digs.
The Lakers also have Miaya Guggisberg (MH/RS), Brooklyn Meyer (DS), Grace Zenk (DS) and Amanda Lorhe (DS) as juniors. Sophomores Addy Kath (RS/MH) and Dacia Fleury (OH), and 8th-grader Haillie (S/RS) Schultz also return with experience for the Lakers.
Minnewaska will try to improve upon a 7-20 overall record from 2021 as the Lakers again play out of the West Central Conference and Section 3AA fields. Sauk Centre, the defending Class AA state champion, won the WCC a year ago after going 33-1 overall and 12-0 in league play.
