Tennis: Alexandria girls sweep Willmar; Osakis competes against tough competition in Delano

Alexandria and Osakis had some matches on Thursday before playing in matches on Friday morning. Alexandria defeated Willmar 7-0 while Osakis fought tough against some Class AA opponents in Delano.

The Alexandria girls tennis team started off its season strong at home with a 7-0 sweep over the Willmar Cardinals on Thursday.

Marisa Rousu, Rachel Wegner, Kylie Lattimer and Teresa Bitzan earned singles wins for Alexandria. In the doubles matches, the teams of Ayla Rolin and Jalyn Halverson, Chelby Runge and Morgan Aure and Meredith Sundby and Madalyn Husfeldt all earned victories for Alexandria.

Alexandria hosted a triangular on Friday with Foley, Monticello and Washburn that began at 10 a.m.

Osakis drops a couple of close matches at Delano Quad

While the Osakis girls tennis team did go 0-3 at a tournament in Delano on Thursday against some strong Class AA programs, those matches were very close to going the other way. Osakis lost 6-1 to Delano and 4-3 to both Brainerd and Orono.

“We had a good day of tennis at the Delano Quad playing against strong competition,” Osakis head coach Ryan Maddock said. “Even though we didn't get a team win, we left the day feeling really good about where our team and look forward to the rest of our season. Highlights of the day were Leah Maddock and Bella Weisser coming away with two wins on the day in singles. Larissa and Bria Hoffarth were each able to get one win on the day. Ellie George and Madeline Anderson got a win versus Brainerd. Our match with Brainerd was very competitive at all spots and gives us confidence moving forward as a team.”

In the Brainerd match, Osakis had clutch three-set victories from Leah Maddock at No. 1 singles, Bria Hoffarth at No. 3 singles and Ellie George/Madeline Anderson at No. 1 doubles. Brainerd won two singles and two doubles matches over Osakis.

Orono beat Osakis by sweeping all three doubles matches. Leah Maddock, Larissa Hoffarth and Weisser picked up singles wins for the Silverstreaks.

Weisser picked up the lone win in the Delano match by defeating Maddie Meister at No. 4 singles in three sets.

Osakis began play in a quadrangular at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle at 8 a.m. on Friday. Parkers Prairie and Benson are in the quadrangular as well.
