Tennis: Alexandria goes 2-1 in opener

The Cardinals beat Hibbing and Grand Rapids around a loss to Elk River as they got their season going on Saturday.

ELK RIVER — The Alexandria boys tennis team got in its season opener at Elk River on Saturday before a new wave of snow came to Minnesota on Sunday evening.

The Cardinals went 2-1 at the quad, falling to host Elk River 5-2 around a 5-2 win over Hibbing and a 6-1 win over Grand Rapids.

“Overall, the Cardinal tennis team was happy with how they competed, supported each other, and learned throughout the day,” head coach Nick Jansen said. “Many new faces gained valuable experience. Coltan Koehn, Matthew Jiang, Owen Godfrey, Leonard Kompelien, and Niklas Cook all earned their first varsity wins on Saturday. The team looks forward to a week of practice before they host Monticello, Crookston and Osakis at home Saturday.”

The Cardinals got their wins in doubles against Elk River with Brennan Lattimer and Ryan Meuwissen winning at second doubles and Jeff Rodewald and Leo Kompelien taking the third spot.

Owen Gilbertson, Cole Haabala and Meuwissen earned wins in singles against Hibbing. Rodewald and Coltan Koehn won at second doubles, and Owen Godfrey and Niklas Cook took the third spot for Alexandria’s fifth point.


The Cardinals also took three of four in singles against Grand Rapids. Haabala, Matthew Jiang and Godfrey won in straight sets.

Pieter Mulder and Blake Svee took a three-setter at first doubles. Rodewald and Koehn, and the duo of Lattimer and Meuwissen then made it a clean sweep in doubles with straight-set wins.
