Softball: Osakis splits with Browerville-Eagle Valley

The Silverstreaks nearly swept, but a chance at a walk-off home run came just short of going over the fence in game one as head coach John Stigman continues to like the way his young players are improving.

OSAKIS — The Osakis softball team (3-8) split a doubleheader with Browerville-Eagle Valley on Thursday night as the Tigers won a 7-5 contest, and the Silverstreaks took a 5-3 game.

“Our goal since day one of the season was to continue to grow,” Osakis head coach John Stigman said. “We continue to do so. We played well today, winning the second game and giving ourselves a chance to win the first. Both Shelbe (Schmidt) and Hayleigh (Niehoff) threw well. Our bats are warming up, defensively we look much more comfortable. This was the end of eight games via doubleheaders. I think we are tired, but we are improving.”

Schmidt gave Osakis seven solid innings from the pitching circle in the win. She scattered seven hits and just one walk, while striking out one.

The offense made her a winner with a single run in the fifth that tied the game at three before two runs in the sixth.

Niehoff was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI in the win, and Maggie Dirkes and Schmidt both had an RBI as well.

Browerville used five runs between the third and fourth innings, and two more in the sixth to secure a 7-5 win. Aubriana Schwanke was 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the game to lead the Tigers.

Niehoff added three hits and two runs scored for Osakis, while Lexi Klimek, Maggie Dirkes, Kennedy George and Lara Drum all had two hits.

The Silverstreaks almost had a walk-off win in game one. Maggie Dirkes nearly hit a three-run home run to right-center field, but the Tigers’ center fielder caught the ball near the top of the fence.
