SARTELL — The Alexandria boys soccer team has played well twice now against a winning Class AAA program in Sartell-St. Stephen.

The Cardinals (8-4-3) beat the Sabres (7-5-2) 1-0 on Sept. 12. Back in Sartell on Thursday, the two teams played to a 1-1 overtime tie. Both teams were scoreless at the half.

“The second half opened with Sartell scoring on a penalty kick in the 45th minute of play as a result of a hand ball in the penalty box,” Alexandria head coach Brandon Johnson said. “While the Cardinals were down in spirits, they dug deep and bounced back. Controlling possession and moving the ball with quick passes allowed Otto Anderson to score from a rebound shot in the 55th minute.”

The Sabres (14-0-1) wrapped up an undefeated regular season on Thursday by beating the Cardinals (13-2) in a 1-0 game after scoring off a free kick in the second half. Even with the loss, it was a confidence boost for this Alexandria team that now enters the Section 8AA playoffs on Oct. 12 as the likely No. 1 seed.

Johnson awarded Henry Ramstorf the Gatorde of the Game, an honor he hands out to a player he thought stood out from each match.

“Henry remained calm and positioned himself well anytime the ball came near him,” Johnson said.
