ALEXANDRIA - The Alexandria girls soccer team will face a familiar opponent in the opening round of the Class AA state tournament.
The Cardinals will take on fourth-seeded Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m. The quarterfinal game will take place at Monticello High School. These two teams faced off in the opening round of last year’s state tournament where Benilde-St. Margaret’s won a 5-0 game. The Red Knights went on to take second place in the 2021 state tournament.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s is 13-4-2 this season after winning the Section 5AA tournament where it outscored three opponents by a combined score of 26-1. The Red Knights average 3.5 goals per game and allow just 0.8.
Alexandria will enter the state tournament with a 16-2 record after beating East Grand Forks in a 1-0 game in the Section 8AA championship. The Cardinals average 3.8 goals per game and allow just 0.3 behind 14 shutouts. That 0.3 goals-against average is the lowest of any Class AA team in the state.
Mahtomedi (16-2) was seeded first in the Class AA state tournament and will face Winona (12-5-2) in the quarterfinals on Oct. 26 at 5:30 p.m. in Farmington. Academy of Holy Angels (17-2) is seeded second and takes on Zimmerman (14-4-1) in the state opener, and third-seeded Mankato East (19-0) faces Cloquet-Carlton (15-3-1).

The winners of the quarterfinal games advance to play at U.S. Bank Stadium in the semifinals on Nov. 2. The state championship game is scheduled for Nov. 4 at 12:30 p.m. back at U.S. Bank Stadium.
