WILLMAR — The Alexandria girls basketball team has played with Section 8-3A front-runner Willmar (12-7) twice this season, but Willmar found a way to close out both games after taking a 61-51 final last Friday night.
Willmar is now 5-0 against sections teams, while Alexandria (8-8) is 4-2 against section opponents.
“We battled down to the wire but Willmar capitalized on the final run, forcing us to foul to extend the game,” Alexandria head coach Wendy Kohler said. “It was a physical battle that capped off a busy week.”

Freshman forward Hadley Thul had 27 points for Alexandria. Freshman guard MaCee Linow added 11, and senior guard Tessa McGrane finished with 9.
Alexandria went 2-1 last week with wins over Sauk Rapids-Rice and Detroit Lakes. The Cardinals will host St. Cloud (9-8) this Thursday ahead of hosting Marshall (15-4) at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
