Boys basketball roundup: Alexandria rolls over St. Cloud Apollo; WCA routs Benson

Alexandria earned a large win on Friday, while WCA did so on Monday, and the B-E boys gave Battle Lake a good push in the first half.

The Alexandria boys basketball team cruised to a 29-point victory (86-57) on the road on Friday against St. Cloud Apollo (1-20, 0-12 Central Lakes Conference), behind a red-hot offense.

Alexandria was led on offense by Mason Witt with 20 points, while Chase Thompson had 18 and Dawson Roderick had 16.

Grayson Grove had a double-double, 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Roderick and Grove were pests on the defensive end, as Roderick had eight deflections and four steals, while Grove had seven deflections, five steals, and four blocks.

The Cardinals (16-4, 11-2 CLC) host Fergus Falls (6-16, 4-8 CLC) at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

WCA seniors shine on senior night

The West Central Area boys basketball team showed out on senior night with a 74-45 win on Monday over the Benson Braves (6-17, 2-12 West Central Conference).

WCA improved to 16-7 (9-4 WCC) with the win.

"We got to honor six outstanding individuals,” WCA head coach Kraig Hunter said. “They are all top notch people. They gave us a good start on defense with a lot of energy, and it carried over to everyone else for the rest of the game."

Senior Jacob Strunk had a double-double, 15 points and 10 steals, along with two assists, while senior Cole Anderson had 16 points, four assists, and four rebounds, and senior Roman Mihailovschi had 11 points and two steals.

Senior Brett Amundson finished with three rebounds, while fellow senior Isaac Kreft had two.

The Knights shot 30-of-63 from the field and made eight three-pointers. Benson sot 17-of-38 from the field.

Bryce Kjesbo finished with nine points, three assists, and three steals, while Mitch Dewey had eight points and four steals, and Cam Anderson had eight points, two rebounds, and five assists. Sam Hanson added four points and two rebounds. Ben Bye had three points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Nas Dotts had two steals and two assists.

WCA hosts Barnesville (14-7) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Strong second half lifts Battle Lake over B-E

The Brandon-Evansville boys basketball team kept things close against Battle Lake on Monday in the first half as Battle Lake only led 36-29 at the break.

But Batlle Lake outscored B-E 44-11 in the second half to seal its win and improve to 19-4 (17-3 Section 6A) while dropping B-E to 6-16 (4-12 Section 6A).

“We had it down to three with under two minutes in the first half, and we played poised and controlled in the first half,” B-E head coach Trent Hintermeister said. “In the second half, we missed a couple of shots early, panicked, and started jacking early shots, and Battle Lake turned those early shots into easy points. Battle Lake is a super athletic team, and we let them use that to their advantage in the second half.”

Battle Lake held a 36-16 edge in rebounds.

Micah Fuller led the B-E offense with 15 points.

B-E hosts Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (17-4, 1-1 Section 6A) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
