Boys basketball: Big second half leads Sauk Centre to playoff win over Osakis

Sauk Centre trailed at halftime but put together a nice second half to defeat Osakis in the Section 6AA quarterfinals.

In a Section 6AA quarterfinal matchup on Saturday at St. John’s, the fifth-seeded Osakis Silverstreaks had the edge over the fourth-seeded Sauk Centre Mainstreeters in the first half.

Osakis jumped out to a 32-25 lead at the half.

But Sauk Centre responded swiftly in the second half, outscoring Osakis 33-23 in the second half to earn a 58-55 over Osakis to advance to the Section 6AA semifinals to play the top-seed Albany on Wednesday at 6 p.m. back at St. John’s University.

Both teams got going offensively as they both shot at or above 50 percent from the field. Sauk Centre finished with a 27-19 edge in rebounds.

Sauk Centre only committed seven fouls in the game but drew 16 on Osakis.

Osakis finished the season with a 21-7 record.

Kyle Mages paced the Osakis offense with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Grant Mages added 10 points, and Isaac Maddock had nine points. Drew Imdieke had a team-high four assists, while Stewart Jones led the team in steals with three.

Jay Neubert paced the Sauk Centre (21-7) offense with 18 points and six rebounds, while Ethan Riley had 13 points and seven rebounds. Andrew Drevlow had 12 points, and Matthew Warring finished with 11 points.
