ALEXANDRIA — The Alexandria Zimney Insurance Post 87 baseball team split a doubleheader with Perham on Friday afternoon.

Perham put up four runs in the seventh inning to win 4-1. All four runs were unearned as two errors and three walks were a part of that rally.

Alexandria’s pitching combined for 24 strikeouts between the two games.

Will Suchy was a big part of that in a dominant start in a 3-0 win. Suchy, a graduated senior from this past spring, allowed two hits and two walks, while striking out 12 in 6.2 shutout innings. Nick Levasseur struck out the only batter he faced in four pitches to end the game.

On June 5, 1972, the Alexandria baseball program qualified for its first-ever state tournament. Rick Banke threw a shutout in both the semifinals and finals on that day. Now five decades later, Banke and Bob Close, who knocked in the game-winning run in the Region 6 finals, look back on the team's trip to the 1972 state tournament.

Grady Anderson provided the offense. He went 3-for-3 with a double and all three RBI’s.
