Baseball roundup: Alexandria Integrity Title Junior Legion Black off to 9-1-1 start

Alexandria Post 87 Legion opens summer season with doubleheader against Bemidji on June 21.

The Alexandria Integrity Title Junior Legion Black baseball team is in the midst of a busy start to its summer, and the team got off to a 9-1-1 start after five straight wins late this past week.

Alexandria was at the Morris Tournament through the weekend where it got an 11-4 win over Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta on Sunday.

A six-run second inning broke the game open. Gavin Klimek, Jordan Kuhnau and Brady Swensrud all doubled in the game, and Ben Scott added a triple. Klimek and Kuhnau both had three RBIs, and Scott added two.

Landon Raths had 11 strikeouts in just 4.1 innings before Kuhnau and Scott pitched the final 2.1 innings.

Another highlight from the weekend came in an 8-0 combined no-hitter against Mound-Westonka.

Carter Simonson was dominant through 5.2 innings as he struck out 13. His only blemish was three walks before Scott came in to complete the no-hitter over the final 1.1 innings.

Alexandria had another powerful offensive display in that game as well. Colten Converse, Kuhnau, Kasen Muscha and Cam Simon all doubled, while Klimek tripled.

The Junior Legion Black team is scheduled to host a doubleheader against Fergus Falls tonight, June 20, starting at 5 p.m.

Post 87 cancels weekend tournament

The Alexandria Post 87 Legion baseball team had a home tournament on its schedule for this past weekend, but that tournament got canceled.

A number of teams originally scheduled to be there had to drop out, and a weekend off allowed players for Alexandria a bit of a break after their spring season lasted all the way until the third-place game at the state tournament on June 15.

Alexandria Post 87 has a doubleheader with Bemidji on its scheduled for June 21 at Knute Nelson Memorial Ballpark that is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. They are then at the Marshall Tournament June 24-26.

Junior Legion Red goes 1-2 in Marshall

The Alexandria Junior Legion Red baseball team was at the Marshall Tournament this past weekend where the team beat Bellevue East 14-6 around a 10-5 loss to Mankato West and a 10-1 loss to Watertown, South Dakota.

Lawton Ketelsen threw five innings in the win over Bellevue East. He scattered eight hits and two walks, allowing six runs, four earned.

Jaxson Bakeberg was 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs and an RBI. Parker Converse and Charlie Runge both drove in three runs as each had two hits that included a double. John Botzet was 2-for-2 with two walks, four runs scored and two RBIs, while Ketelsen also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Alexandria’s Junior Legion Red team is scheduled to host a doubleheader with Moorhead starting at 5 p.m. on June 22.

Starbuck Junior Legion goes 3-2 at Minnetonka Tournament

The Starbuck Junior Legion baseball team went 3-2 at a tournament in Minnetonka that wrapped up on Sunday.

Starbuck beat Eastview in a 6-5 game, Excelsior in a 22-0 final, and the Harrisburg Tigers in an 11-3 game. The losses came in an 8-6 final against St. Michael-Albertville and a 9-5 game against Creighton Prep.

PJ Johnson tripled as part of a big game in the 22-0 win over Excelsior. He finished 4-for-4 at the plate with a walk, three runs scored and five RBIs. Dylan Alexander, Noah Jensen and Austin Weber all drove in two runs apiece as well.
