Baseball: Alexandria Post 87 holds off Bemidji Centaurs, 4-3, in Sub-state playoff game

The Alexandria Zimny Insurance Post 87 baseball team made some clutch plays late to earn a 4-3 win over the Bemidji Centaurs on Thursday. With the win, Alexandria will now play Moorhead in its next game at Division One American Legion Sub-state 14 tournament at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

Alexandria will now meet Moorhead in another playoff game on July 22, 2022, in Moorhead at 6:30 p.m.

MOORHEAD - In the top seventh inning in Thursday’s playoff game against the Bemidji Centaurs, the Alexandria Zimny Insurance Post 87’s Nick Levasseur and the defense behind him were holding on to a 4-3 lead with two outs and with a runner on third.

On the previous play, Alexandria completed a 4-6-3 double play but Bemidji scored a run to cut its deficit to one.

Levasseur delivered for Alexandria by throwing a strikeout and earning the save.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Reed Reisdorf hit into a fielder’s choice which allowed Lake Hagen to score. This was followed by an RBI single by Brock Lerfald.

Thursday’s game was a back and forth battle that featured both teams scoring a run in the second inning, Alexandria (15-8) scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and Bemidji then responding with a run in the top of the sixth inning.

Hagen led Alexandria in hits with two. JD Hennen earned the win on the mound for Alexandria as he threw six strikeouts in six innings pitched. Bemidji had just three hits in the game.

With the win, Alexandria is now 2-0 at the Division One American Legion Sub-state 14 tournament and will play the Moorhead Spuds at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in Moorhead.

Alexandria Post 87 scores 12 unanswered to defeat Fergus Falls 12-2. Alexandria will play Bemidji in the next round of the sub-state 14 playoffs at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Moorhead.

The winner of that game advances to the sub-state championship at 2:30 on Saturday and Noon on Sunday (if necessary).

Alexandria and Moorhead split a doubleheader in the regular season at Knute Nelson Memorial Park in Alexandria on June 28.

The loser of the Alexandria-Moorhead game will play either Perham, Detroit Lakes, Bemidji or East Grand Forks on Saturday at 11 a.m.

This tournament is a double-elimination tournament.
