Tate Estes Hill, now 12 years old from Austin, Texas, was hooked on fishing from the time she was 2 and won the Echo Press’ Vacationer weekly prize for her age group with a 4-ounce sunfish taken from Lake Cowdry with her grandpa.

That was the first fish she had ever caught. On Aug. 11 of this year, Tate landed the biggest fish she has ever caught. She was fishing on Lake Brophy that day when she latched into a 7-pound, 2-ounce northern.

Tate was using a sucker minnow in 20 feet of water when the fish hit. She had to battle not only the northern, but also a huge patch of weeds that was attached to it after the pike dove into the weeds after getting hooked. The fish was released after a few photos.
