The Osakis girls basketball team had its first road test of the season on Friday night as the Silverstreaks pushed Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta before falling in a 54-48 final.
The Tigers (2-0) forced the Silverstreaks (1-1) into 29.7% shooting (19-of-64), but Osakis hung close by forcing 20 turnovers. Morris Area countered by shooting 42.9% (21-49) to secure the win.
“The girls played really hard,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “Unfortunately, we didn't come out of it with a win, but the effort was great. I thought we played good defense, rebounded the ball well, and took care of the ball on the offensive end. We had a tough night shooting the basketball. That's the one area that stuck out stat-wise. Despite that, we were able to stay in the game versus a very good Morris team.”
Mara VanNyhuis had 16 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals to lead the way for Osakis. Alexis Johanson added 14 points.
“The girls need to continue with the effort and intensity they have been playing with and stay focused,” Kalpin said. “The shots will fall for us. The key will be continuing to take the open shots and running the offense.”
