Alexandria Technical and Community College will give its students a new and unique opportunity to compete on area waters starting in the fall of 2021.

The local school is adding competitive fishing to its Legends Athletics portfolio. In doing so, Alexandria College will become the first two-year college in Minnesota to offer competitive fishing. Joe Scegura, a mechatronics program instructor at ATCC who is also an experienced fishing guide, will work with the team as its coach.

“With access to more than 300 lakes in Douglas County, many with legendary fishing experiences, competitive fishing is an obvious next step for our athletics program,” ATCC President Michael Seymour said. “We’re excited to continue growing our athletics offerings to create opportunities for students to compete and enjoy a robust student life experience.”

Bass will be the targeted fish during the upcoming fall season. Team members compete against each other in a series of weekly tournaments on area lakes. The top competitors from the league will have opportunities to go on to represent ATCC in regional and national tournaments in the summer and fall of 2022.

The college is also looking at other fishing opportunities for students in the future, such as winter fishing competition.

To participate on the inaugural team, students must be admitted and enrolled for fall 2021 and must have a current Minnesota fishing license. Participants are also responsible for having access to a boat they can use and provide their own gas, bait and tackle, life jacket and transportation to area lakes. The college has storage space available for boats.
