Lumberjacks edge Alexandria in the third period

Carter Rieland and Alex Heidenreich scored for the Blizzard, but it wasn't enough in a 3-2 loss at Granite City.

The Granite City Lumberjacks (18-8-0-1, 37 points, second place) won a close game between two teams near each other in the West Division standings on Friday night in a 3-2 win over Alexandria (14-16-1, 29 points, fourth place).

Carson Simon scored the game-winner for Granite City at 4:34 of the third period.

It was a 2-2 game after two periods. Carter Rieland and Alex Heidenreich scored for the Blizzard, while Dallas Duckson, Sean Kenny, Caleb Strong and Nikolai Rajala had assists. Ben Anderson and Troy Dahlheimer added second-period goals for the Lumberjacks.

Granite City outshot Alexandria 32-29 and got the win in goal from Bailey Huber after 27 saves. Atticus Kelly stopped 29 shots but took the loss after the three goals allowed.

Alexandria is off until March 10 when these two teams play again, this time at the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria with a puck drop of 7:10 p.m.
