With six starters returning on offense and five on defense, the Minnewaska football team is seeking another winning season in the West Central Conference.

The Lakers finished with a 5-4 record in 2013, including a 5-3 record in the conference. The season ended abruptly for Minnewaska in a 40-7 loss to Sauk Centre in the first round of the Section 5AA playoffs.
Head coach Steve Hill expects the offensive line to be a big strength. Three starters are back on the line, including seniors Mike Maus and Jackson Hendrickson and junior Grant Hitchcock.
Hill said senior Thorin Erickson, juniors Jeff Helander, Nelson Lundebrek, Blake Joos and sophomore Jordan Koubsky will all compete for the final starting spots on the offensive line.
Senior running backs Will Anderson and Luke Nielsen will lead the ground game along with junior Greg Helander. Other running game contributors include senior flanker Jon Nygaard, juniors Justin Amundson, Marcelo Arredondo, Tanner Lybek and fullback Tony Hill.
Returning senior tight end starter Matt Paulson and receivers Austin VerSteeg and Matt McIver are expected to contribute to the Lakers’ passing game.
At quarterback, Hill said junior Michael Gruber and sophomore Colin Richards will both be in the mix for playing time.
Defensively, Maus returns on the line, along with Paulson, Greg Helander and Anderson at linebacker. Nygaard is also a returning starter at defensive back.
McIver will handle both kicking and punting duties for Minnewaska, and Nygaard, McIver, Amundson and Holmes will all return kicks and punts for the Lakers.
