Johnsruds lead otherwise young group for Minnewaska boys

Peyton and Connor Johnsrud return for the Minnewaska boys track and field team coming off of top-six finishes at the state meet in 2019 in what is an otherwise relatively new team to the varsity level this spring.

The Minnewaska boys track and field team has athletes who need to get their feet wet at the varsity level this spring season after missing all of 2020.

“This makes it very difficult to know what to expect for this season,” co-head coach Daniel Timm said. “It is going to take some patience from everyone on the team as we figure things out, especially early in the season.”

Timm is in his third season as the Lakers’ co-head coach with Riley Gustafson. They have five seniors to lean on in Peyton Johnsrud, Connor Johnsrud, Zachary Morton, Connor Nestor and Colby Sorenson, and juniors in DeShon Boyd, Noah Danielson, Isaac Koenig, Jacob Lien, Isaac Meyer, Andrew Mrnak, Gage Rogers and Dylan Stryhn.

“I am confident that our athletes will improve and find success as the season progresses,” Timm said. “We have a group of dedicated coaches who will be able to get our athletes in the right events and give them the coaching needed to be successful. We also have a good group of leaders in our junior and senior classes who are willing to work hard and help out our younger athletes. It is awesome to see them giving the younger athletes pointers and becoming almost like another group of coaches helping out in the different events.”

The Johnsruds are two of those seniors who are back with a lot of experience to lean on. Peyton finished second at the Class A state meet in 2019 in the high jump after clearing 6-feet, 7-inches, and Connor was sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 42-feet, 10.75 inches.

“They are both looking forward to the opportunity to compete and try to get back to the state meet again as seniors,” Timm said. “With no season last year, it is hard to know what other teams have and which teams will be strong in which areas. We are making it a point to really focus on our team and do the best that we can.”
