Baseball is still going with summer weather hanging on into September in Alexandria, and the town’s 50-and-older team, the Redbirds, swept a two-game set with Apple Valley this past weekend to improve to 8-6 overall on the season.
Alexandria won game one 13-3 with the 10-run rule coming into play after four innings. That was the prelude to a 12-2 win in game two after Alexandria’s six-run fifth frame. Joe Korkowski went the distance on the mound in that win, and Jeff Hook crushed a grand slam to lead the way offensively. It was the first-ever over-the-fence home run for the Redbirds.
Kurt Kuhn and Greg Serum teamed up on the mound to help Alexandria win game one. Hook started off his big day with two triples in that game, and Jerrod Kelley added a triple himself as the Redbirds blew things open.
Korkowski had four hits, including two doubles, through both games. Hook had a huge day by driving in eight runs on three hits, and Doug Breikreutz, Kelley and Tom Anderson all had two RBIs on the day, as well.
Kuhn (1 RBI), Lee Backhaus (1 RBI), Roger Johnson (1 RBI), Bob Brittin (4 RBI), Jon Brundell (1 RBI), Serum (1 RB)) and Mike Weber (1 hit) all chipped in through a doubleheader where the Redbirds accumulated 28 hits and 25 runs.

The Redbirds host a doubleheader at Knute Nelson Memorial Ballpark against the St. Louis Park Bees starting at 11 a.m. on Sept. 26. St. Louis Park was the fourth-ranked team in state last year. Admission is free to this Saturday’s games, and these are the last home games of the season for Alexandria.
