The Alexandria girls hockey team wants to play as many good teams as it can throughout the regular season in order to be ready for the Section 8AA playoffs, and going to Maple Grove on Saturday gave the Cardinals a good test against a non-section opponent.

The Crimson are 3-0-1 after a 3-goal third period secured a 3-0 win over the Cardinals (1-3). Tia Rice, Bella Shipley and Ella Olson all scored as Maple Grove outshot Alexandria 39-18.

Blizzard fall at Granite City

The Alexandria Blizzard ran into the top team in the West Division on Saturday night as Granite City hosted the Blizzard and won 7-1 after a 4-goal third period.

The Lumberjacks are on the verge of running away with the division as they improved to 20-1 with 40 points. Mason City is second in the division with 29 points and a 14-6-1 record.

Alexandria got a late first-period goal from Ryan Hadland off assists from Matt McIntyre and Sean Kenny that made it a 1-1 game going into the first intermission. Granite City responded with two goals in the second period and four in the third. Bjorn Jorgenson and Kullan Daikawa both had two goals, while Zak Kennett, Andrew Butler and Nick Mountain had one goal apiece.

Joey Greilich had 35 saves and the 7 goals allowed in net for Alexandria. Quentin Sigurdson stopped 16 shots to earn the win.

The Blizzard are fourth in the West Division with 18 points and a 9-10 record. Alexandria will go to Willmar to face the WarHawks on Dec. 1 before the Blizzard host Granite City at the Runestone Community Center on Dec. 3. Both games start at 7:10 p.m.
