The Alexandria Blizzard hockey team opened up its 2021-22 season on the road this past weekend as the Blizzard dropped 8-5 and 3-2 games to the Mason City Toros.

Mason City outshot Alexandria 38-31 in that 3-2 final. The Toros jumped out 2-0 with goals from Carter Newpower and Cullen Hogan before Benjamin Tschida scored at 16:52 of the second period for the Blizzard. Ryan Hadland tied it at 2-2 in the third off a Sean Kenny assist, but Mason City’s Jack Campion scored the game-winner at 18:51 of the third.

Alexandria native Bailey Rosch started in net for the Blizzard and stopped 35 of the 38 shots he faced, while Erik Chaffe got the win with 29 saves.

The offenses were on display in the season opener as Cal Levis and Newpower each had two goals to lead Mason City to that 8-5 win.

Alexandria’s goals came from five different players as Ryan Hadland, Wyatt Johnson, Matt McIntyre, Justin Wasvick and Michael Debrito each found the back of the net. Kaden Peterson had two assists, and Sean Kenny added three.

The Blizzard go back on the road this Friday and Saturday night. They face the Minnesota Loons at the Breezy Point Hockey Center on Friday at 7:30 before a game in Willmar on Saturday at 7:10.

The Blizzard’s home opener is set for Oct. 9 when Willmar comes to the Runestone Community Center for a 7:10 p.m. drop of the puck.
